Chong Yee will be speaking at BioMalaysia 2008 (7-9 October 2008, Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre), on the topic of “Protecting Biotech Inventions”. His talk will be on the second day of the conference, 8th October 2008, at 5pm.

Abstract of Talk

The biotechnology industry is characterised by a long lead time to profitability. Most biotech companies are startups and have no products out in the market. To investors, their value lies in the inventions arising out of their research. Strong protection for such inventions, by way of the patent system, is the cornerstone of a successful biotech industry.

This presentation provides an introduction to biotech and pharma patenting. Participants will gain an insight into the different types of patentable subject matter in the life sciences and understand the various conditions for patentability. An outline of the procedures for obtaining patents will also be presented. This presentation serves as a foundation for participants to maximise the value of their biotech and pharma inventions.
