About Singapore Patent Lawyers

Intellectual Property Law Specialists

Cantab IP comprises experts in intellectual property law, including patent law, trade mark law, registered design law and copyright law.

Although we practice intellectual property law daily, we prefer not to describe ourselves as “intellectual property lawyers” “patent lawyers” or “trade mark lawyers”.

One of the reasons is because we are not regulated by the Singapore Law Society. Neither are we members of the Singapore Academy of Law.

Another reason is that we, as patent attorneys, are in addition to being legally trained and qualified, also scientifically and technically qualified. This is unlike the situation for most lawyers in Singapore, who are in the main advocates and solicitors without any science degree.

We are therefore very well placed to help you protect your intellectual property, particularly in the field of patents.

Experts in Patent Law

We are qualified to advise on all aspects of intellectual property law, including obtaining IP rights (e.g., patent drafting, prosecution and grant), enforcing IP rights (e.g., patent infringement and trade mark infringement), defending IP rights (e.g., patent revocation, patent opposition, trade mark revocation and trade mark opposition). We can advise on Plant Variety Rights and Supplementary Protection Certificates.

We have undergone rigourous training in IP law and have passed a number of strict legal and practice examinations overseen by the patent offices of the United Kingdom, Europe and Singapore.

These include the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys (CIPA) Qualifying Examinations, the European Qualifying Examinations (EQE) conducted by the European Patent Office and the Singapore Patent Agent Qualifying Examinations (PAQE) conducted by the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS). We are therefore well qualified to advise you in IP law in these and other jurisdictions.

The Patent Agent Profession in Singapore

Patent attorneys in Singapore are regulated by IPOS (the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore) under the Patents (Patent Agents) Rules 2001, enacted under the Patents Act 1995 . Patent agents who are members of the Association of Singapore Patent Attorneys (ASPA) are also bound by the ASPA Code of Conduct.

Practising patent agents in Singapore are required to obtain an annual Practising Certificate, one of the conditions of which is that adequate professional indemnity insurance is in place.

We hold global professional liability insurance provided by PAMIA Ltd, administered by Thomas Miller Professional Indemnity of 90 Fenchurch Street London EC3M 4ST.
